The Panama straw hat is woven with the fibers of a palm tree characteristic of the Ecuadorian coast called toquilla. To obtain an extra fine weave it takes up to eight months of work and the price of a hat can reach €10,000 for a tight weave when it bears the label of a luxury brand.

The weavers are mostly from peasant families who have passed down their know-how from generation to generation since the 16th century. The traditional weaving of the toquilla straw hat (Panama) has been included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2012.
